9Proclaim this among the nations: “Prepare for war; rouse the mighty men; let all the men of war advance and attack!
10Beat your plowshares into swords and your pruning hooks into spears. Let the weak say, ‘I am strong!’
11Come quickly, all you surrounding nations, and gather yourselves. Bring down Your mighty ones, O LORD.
12Let the nations be roused and advance to the Valley of Jehoshaphat, for there I will sit down to judge all the nations on every side.
13Swing the sickle, for the harvest is ripe. Come, trample the grapes, for the winepress is full; the wine vats overflow because their wickedness is great.
14Multitudes, multitudes in the valley of decision! For the Day of the LORD is near in the valley of decision.
15The sun and moon will grow dark, and the stars will no longer shine.
16The LORD will roar from Zion and raise His voice from Jerusalem; heaven and earth will tremble. But the LORD will be a refuge for His people, a stronghold for the people of Israel.

The nations are summoned to prepare for war. Their warriors must advance, their plowshares become swords, and their pruning hooks become spears. Even the weak are to say, “I am strong!” They gather at the Valley of Jehoshaphat, where the LORD will sit to judge them.
The scene becomes a harvest. A sickle is called for because the crop is ripe; the winepress is full because the nations’ wickedness is great. This harvest pictures judgment rather than a joyful gathering of food.
Multitudes crowd the valley of decision. In this setting, the decision is the LORD’s judgment upon the assembled nations. The Day of the LORD is near. The sun and moon darken, and the stars stop shining.
The LORD roars from Zion, and heaven and earth tremble at His voice. Yet He is a refuge and stronghold for His people Israel. The nations have gathered their weapons, but the judgment and the protection of God’s people remain in His hands.
How We Know
Isaiah 2:4 describes the nations turning swords into plowshares and ceasing to learn war. Joel 3:10 uses the opposite image: farm tools become weapons as nations gather for judgment. Reading the two passages together helps keep Joel’s command in its particular setting, rather than treating it as a general instruction to pursue war.
