Joel 3:1-8
I Will Enter Into Judgment
1“Yes, in those days and at that time, when I restore Judah and Jerusalem from captivity,
2I will gather all the nations and bring them down to the Valley of Jehoshaphat. There I will enter into judgment against them concerning My people, My inheritance, Israel, whom they have scattered among the nations as they divided up My land.
3They cast lots for My people; they bartered a boy for a prostitute and sold a girl for wine to drink.
4Now what do you have against Me, O Tyre, Sidon, and all the regions of Philistia? Are you rendering against Me a recompense? If you retaliate against Me, I will swiftly and speedily return your recompense upon your heads.
5For you took My silver and gold and carried off My finest treasures to your temples.
6You sold the people of Judah and Jerusalem to the Greeks, to send them far from their homeland.
7Behold, I will rouse them from the places to which you sold them; I will return your recompense upon your heads.
8I will sell your sons and daughters into the hands of the people of Judah, and they will sell them to the Sabeans—to a distant nation.” Indeed, the LORD has spoken.

Joel turns from the Spirit poured out on God's people to judgment against nations that scattered them and divided their land. The setting is called the Valley of Jehoshaphat, a name connected with the LORD's judgment. The emphasis is not on giving us a map to find, but on declaring that the nations will answer for what they did.
I will gather all the nations and bring them down to the Valley of Jehoshaphat. There I will enter into judgment against them concerning My people, My inheritance, Israel, whom they have scattered among the nations as they divided up My land.
The charges are direct. People have been scattered, land has been divided, a boy has been bartered for a prostitute, and a girl has been sold for wine. Joel is describing human beings treated as merchandise. The wording is disturbing because the practice was disturbing, not because the victims are the source of shame.
Tyre, Sidon, and the regions of Philistia are then addressed. They are asked what they have against God and whether they are trying to collect a payment from Him. Their violence toward God's people will not be treated as a transaction that ends when the sale is complete.
The LORD says that the silver, gold, and finest treasures taken to temples will be answered for. He also says the people sold to the Greeks will be brought back, and the recompense will return to those who caused the harm. Joel's language of repayment is placed in God's hands.
This does not authorize a family to imitate the judgment. We should not turn every conflict into a claim that God has condemned the person we dislike. The passage gives comfort to people whose bodies, homes, and children have been treated as property. God sees the trade and promises to judge it.
Teach the people in your care to recognize dehumanizing exchange. People are not bargaining chips, sources of status, or tools for someone else's pleasure. Notice when a person is being treated as a product, and seek protection for the vulnerable rather than treating their pain as a lesson for our own importance.
How We Know
Amos 1:6-9 condemns Philistia and Tyre for taking whole communities captive and handing them over. Obadiah 1:10-14 condemns Edom for violence against Jacob, entering the city, and handing over survivors. Joel's judgment against nations that scatter and sell God's people fits that wider prophetic witness.
