A Gate for the Sheep

1“Truly, truly, I tell you, whoever does not enter the sheepfold by the gate, but climbs in some other way, is a thief and a robber.
2But the one who enters by the gate is the shepherd of the sheep.
3The gatekeeper opens the gate for him, and the sheep listen for his voice. He calls his own sheep by name and leads them out.
4When he has brought out all his own, he goes on ahead of them, and his sheep follow him because they know his voice.
5But they will never follow a stranger; in fact, they will flee from him because they do not recognize his voice.”
6Jesus spoke to them using this illustration, but they did not understand what He was telling them.
7So He said to them again, “Truly, truly, I tell you, I am the gate for the sheep.
8All who came before Me were thieves and robbers, but the sheep did not listen to them.
9I am the gate. If anyone enters through Me, he will be saved. He will come in and go out and find pasture.
10The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I have come that they may have life, and have it in all its fullness.

Jesus describes a shepherd arriving at a sheepfold. He enters through the gate, and the gatekeeper lets him in. He knows his sheep well enough to call them by name. They recognize his voice and follow him as he leads them out. A stranger may climb into the enclosure, but the sheep will run from a voice they do not know.
His listeners do not understand, so Jesus gives another explanation: He is the gate for the sheep. Anyone who enters through Him will be saved, go in and out, and find pasture. The picture includes both safety and food. Jesus gives access to the life His people need, and they can depend on Him for their care.
He contrasts Himself with thieves who come to take and destroy. His warning about those who came before Him should not be read as condemning every earlier servant of God. Jesus has already said that Moses wrote about Him and that the Scriptures testify about Him (John 5:39, 46). Here He exposes those whose claims to lead harm the sheep rather than bring them to Him.
The contrast ends with Jesus' purpose: He came so that His people would have life in all its fullness. He does not treat them as something to use up. After the account of the healed man being thrown out, this promise of salvation and pasture matters deeply. People may shut someone out, but Jesus Himself is the gate through whom life is found.

We can ask for His help without having to earn our way through the gate. He invites us to enter through Him.

Lord Jesus, thank You for opening the way to life and caring for Your sheep. Help us recognize Your voice in Scripture and trust You with the worries before us. Keep us from following those who would use or harm us, and teach us to depend on Your care. Amen.
