The Spirit Will Be with You

15If you love Me, you will keep My commandments.
16And I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Advocate to be with you forever—
17the Spirit of truth. The world cannot receive Him, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him. But you do know Him, for He abides with you and will be in you.
18I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you.
19In a little while the world will see Me no more, but you will see Me. Because I live, you also will live.
20On that day you will know that I am in My Father, and you are in Me, and I am in you.
21Whoever has My commandments and keeps them is the one who loves Me. The one who loves Me will be loved by My Father, and I will love him and reveal Myself to him.”
22Judas (not Iscariot) asked Him, “Lord, why are You going to reveal Yourself to us and not to the world?”
23Jesus replied, “If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word. My Father will love him, and We will come to him and make Our home with him.
24Whoever does not love Me does not keep My words. The word that you hear is not My own, but it is from the Father who sent Me.

Jesus connects loving Him with keeping His commands, then promises help for the disciples He is about to leave. He will ask the Father to give them another Advocate, the Spirit of truth, who will be with them forever. They will not have to carry on with only their memories and determination.
The world does not receive the Spirit because it does not see or know Him. Jesus tells the disciples that they know Him: He abides with them and will be in them. The presence Jesus promises is personal and lasting, not an occasional feeling they must work to recover.
He also says He will not leave them as orphans. They will see Him, and because He lives, they will live. His departure will not sever their life with Him. Jesus speaks of being in His Father and of His disciples being in Him, with Him in them.
Judas, not Iscariot, asks why Jesus will reveal Himself to them and not to the world. Jesus answers in terms of love and obedience: the Father and Son will come and make their home with the person who loves Him and keeps His word. He does not describe a public display that forces everyone to recognize Him. He promises fellowship with those who receive Him and live by His words.

Jesus, thank you for promising the Spirit of truth. Make our household honest, merciful, and willing to obey, and help us recognize your presence when faithfulness is quiet or costly. Amen.
