The True Vine
Read the passage
1“I am the true vine, and My Father is the keeper of the vineyard.
2He cuts off every branch in Me that bears no fruit, and every branch that does bear fruit, He prunes to make it even more fruitful.
3You are already clean because of the word I have spoken to you.
4Remain in Me, and I will remain in you. Just as no branch can bear fruit by itself unless it remains in the vine, neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in Me.
5I am the vine and you are the branches. The one who remains in Me, and I in him, will bear much fruit. For apart from Me you can do nothing.
6If anyone does not remain in Me, he is like a branch that is thrown away and withers. Such branches are gathered up, thrown into the fire, and burned.
7If you remain in Me and My words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you.
8This is to My Father’s glory, that you bear much fruit, proving yourselves to be My disciples.
9As the Father has loved Me, so have I loved you. Remain in My love.
10If you keep My commandments, you will remain in My love, just as I have kept My Father’s commandments and remain in His love.
11I have told you these things so that My joy may be in you and your joy may be complete.

Jesus calls Himself the true vine and His Father the keeper of the vineyard. His disciples are branches. A branch does not supply its own life; it bears fruit because it remains connected to the vine. Jesus tells them that apart from Him they can do nothing.
The Father cares for the vineyard by removing fruitless branches and pruning fruitful ones so they bear more. Jesus also tells the disciples they are already clean because of His word. The picture gives both reassurance and a serious warning: a branch that does not remain in Him withers and is burned. Life with Him cannot be replaced by an outward claim to belong.
Remaining in Jesus is not a vague spiritual feeling. His words remain in His disciples, and they keep His commands. He connects this with prayer: those who remain in Him and keep His words may ask and receive. This is not a detached promise to grant every passing wish. The prayer belongs to a life being taught and directed by Him.
Jesus tells them to remain in His love, just as He keeps His Father's commands and remains in the Father's love. Fruitfulness brings glory to the Father and shows that they are Jesus' disciples. Yet the goal is not anxious productivity. He has told them these things so that His joy may be in them and their joy may be complete. The life He gives is meant to grow into loving obedience and shared joy.

What This Means for Us

The pruning image also invites us to accept correction. If His words expose a habit that harms love, we can ask for help to change it. We do not need to label every painful event as a particular act of pruning or claim to know why someone else suffers. The Father knows how to tend His vineyard; our calling is to remain in His Son.
Prayer
Lord Jesus, keep us dependent on You. Let Your words guide our prayers and correct what needs to change. Grow love and obedience in our family, and give us the joy of living close to You. Amen.
