Mustard Seed and Yeast

18Then Jesus asked, “What is the kingdom of God like? To what can I compare it?
19It is like a mustard seed that a man tossed into his garden. It grew and became a tree, and the birds of the air nested in its branches.”
20Again He asked, “To what can I compare the kingdom of God?
21It is like leaven that a woman took and mixed into three measures of flour, until all of it was leavened.”

Jesus asks what the kingdom of God is like and what He can compare it to. He says it is like a grain of mustard seed that a man takes and sows in his garden.
The seed grows and becomes a tree, and the birds of the air make nests in its branches. Something that begins almost unnoticed becomes a place where other creatures find room.
Jesus asks again what the kingdom is like. He compares it to leaven that a woman takes and hides in three measures of flour until all of it is leavened.
Both images begin small and work beyond the first glance. The kingdom is God's work, not a household project we can force into immediate visibility. Its growth can be quiet while still becoming substantial.

What This Means for Us
Jesus does not ask families to manufacture impressive spiritual results. He gives them permission to honor small acts of faithfulness whose effects may take time to see.
When a conversation about Jesus seems small or a prayer appears to have little effect, we need not measure God's kingdom by that first impression. Keep listening to his word and doing the good at hand. The result belongs to the God whose kingdom Jesus describes.

God of the kingdom, help us trust Your quiet work. Make our household faithful in small beginnings, patient in hidden growth, and increasingly welcoming to the people You bring near. Amen.
