The Beloved Son

21When all the people were being baptized, Jesus was baptized too. And as He was praying, heaven was opened,
22and the Holy Spirit descended on Him in a bodily form like a dove. And a voice came from heaven: “You are My beloved Son; in You I am well pleased.”
23Jesus Himself was about thirty years old when He began His ministry. He was regarded as the son of Joseph, the son of Heli,
24the son of Matthat, the son of Levi, the son of Melchi, the son of Jannai, the son of Joseph,

As Jesus prays after his baptism, heaven opens. The Holy Spirit descends upon him in bodily form like a dove, and a voice says:
You are My beloved Son; in You I am well pleased.
The Father speaks, the Son receives his declaration, and the Spirit descends. Jesus' identity is made known before Luke describes the public ministry ahead. He is the beloved Son, entering that work with the Father's approval and the Spirit upon him.
Luke then traces his family line backward, naming David and Abraham and continuing all the way to Adam. He carefully says Jesus was regarded as Joseph's son, consistent with the earlier account of his conception by the Holy Spirit. The list places him within a real human family without undoing that announcement.
This Son shares our humanity and comes within Israel's story, yet his significance reaches the whole human family. The genealogy ends with Adam, called the son of God; the voice from heaven has identified Jesus personally as God's beloved Son. As we read on, it matters who he is, not merely what an impressive teacher or healer he will become.
How We Know
Mark 1:9–11 and Matthew 3:13–17 also describe Jesus' baptism, the Spirit descending like a dove, and the heavenly declaration of the beloved Son. Luke particularly notes Jesus praying. These parallel Gospel accounts agree on the central scene, while each tells it in its own wording and setting.

Within our homes, we can also show children that a poor result or a failure is a reason for help and correction, not for withdrawing our love.
