Sheep among Wolves

16Behold, I am sending you out like sheep among wolves; therefore be as shrewd as snakes and as innocent as doves.
17But beware of men, for they will hand you over to their councils and flog you in their synagogues.
18On My account you will be brought before governors and kings as witnesses to them and to the Gentiles.
19But when they hand you over, do not worry about how to respond or what to say. In that hour you will be given what to say.
20For it will not be you speaking, but the Spirit of your Father speaking through you.
21Brother will betray brother to death, and a father his child; children will rise against their parents and have them put to death.
22You will be hated by everyone because of My name, but the one who perseveres to the end will be saved.
23When they persecute you in one town, flee to the next. Truly I tell you, you will not reach all the towns of Israel before the Son of Man comes.
24A disciple is not above his teacher, nor a servant above his master.
25It is enough for a disciple to be like his teacher, and a servant like his master. If the head of the house has been called Beelzebul, how much more the members of his household!

Jesus warns the twelve that he is sending them out like sheep in the midst of wolves. He tells them to be wise as serpents and innocent as doves. The image combines alertness with clean motives: disciples should recognize danger without becoming predatory themselves.
Jesus says they will be delivered to courts, flogged in synagogues, and dragged before governors and kings for his sake. He tells them not to be anxious about how to speak in that moment because the Spirit of their Father will speak through them. The promise is for persecuted witnesses, not a reason to avoid preparation or to treat every disagreement as persecution.
The danger reaches into families. Brother may deliver brother to death, parents and children may turn against one another, and disciples may be hated because of Jesus' name. Jesus tells them to endure to the end and, when persecuted in one town, flee to the next. He does not command them to remain in danger in order to prove courage.
A disciple is not above the teacher. If people call the master Beelzebul, they may slander his household too. Jesus prepares his followers for the cost of truthful witness while giving them a pattern of wisdom, movement, and reliance on God.
Jesus also says they will not reach all Israel’s towns before the Son of Man comes. Christians have understood the timing of this saying differently. The clear instructions surrounding it remain: keep bearing witness, flee persecution when necessary and persevere in allegiance to Him.

What This Means for Us
Jesus does not send disciples into danger with either naïveté or a thirst for conflict. Being shrewd as snakes means paying attention to motives, power, and escape routes. Being innocent as doves means refusing deceit, cruelty, and revenge even when others behave badly.
The instruction to flee is an important correction to spiritualized endurance. A person can remain faithful while leaving an abusive home, reporting a crime, changing churches, or seeking protection. The goal is not to prove that suffering cannot affect you; it is to bear witness to Christ with truth and wisdom.
Choose one practical safeguard for a difficult situation. Tell the truth to someone trustworthy, make a plan for safety, or decline an argument that would only give hatred a larger voice.
Prayer
Father, sustain those who face hatred because they belong to Jesus. Give them words to speak, wisdom about danger and strength to persevere. Keep us faithful and free from revenge when we face opposition. Amen.
