Whom to Fear

26So do not be afraid of them. For there is nothing concealed that will not be disclosed, and nothing hidden that will not be made known.
27What I tell you in the dark, speak in the daylight; what is whispered in your ear, proclaim from the housetops.
28Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Instead, fear the One who can destroy both soul and body in hell.
29Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground apart from the will of your Father.
30And even the very hairs of your head are all numbered.
31So do not be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.
32Therefore everyone who confesses Me before men, I will also confess him before My Father in heaven.
33But whoever denies Me before men, I will also deny him before My Father in heaven.

Jesus tells His disciples to speak openly what He has taught them. What has been concealed will be disclosed. Opposition must not make them hide the message they have received.
People can kill the body, but they cannot kill the soul. Jesus tells His disciples to fear the One who can destroy both soul and body in hell. God’s judgment has a reach that human threats do not. Reverence for Him changes whose verdict they must treat as final.
This same God is their Father. Two sparrows sell for a penny, yet neither falls apart from His will. Even the hairs of their heads are numbered. They are worth more than many sparrows; no persecutor can make them forgotten or worthless to Him.
Jesus then speaks about confessing or denying Him before others. He will confess those who confess Him before His Father, and deny those who deny Him. Allegiance to Him matters beyond the immediate cost of speaking.
The promise does not say His followers cannot be harmed. Jesus has already warned that some will be killed. Their courage rests in the Father’s knowledge and care, and in the fact that human violence cannot take God’s place as final judge.

But you can ask the Father for an honest, gracious way to acknowledge Jesus. The Lord who calls you to speak also knows every hair on your head.

Father, teach us to revere You more than we fear people. Thank You for knowing us so completely. Give us courage to acknowledge Jesus with honesty and love, and sustain those whose witness puts their lives at risk. Amen.
