The Remnant and the LORD's Vengeance

7Then the remnant of Jacob will be in the midst of many peoples like dew from the LORD, like showers on the grass, which do not wait for man or linger for mankind.
8Then the remnant of Jacob will be among the nations, in the midst of many peoples, like a lion among the beasts of the forest, like a young lion among flocks of sheep, which tramples and tears as it passes through, with no one to rescue them.
9Your hand will be lifted over your foes, and all your enemies will be cut off.
10“In that day,” declares the LORD, “I will remove your horses from among you and wreck your chariots.
11I will remove the cities of your land and tear down all your strongholds.
12I will cut the sorceries from your hand, and you will have no fortune-tellers.
13I will also cut off the carved images and sacred pillars from among you, so that you will no longer bow down to the work of your own hands.
14I will root out the Asherah poles from your midst and demolish your cities.
15I will take vengeance in anger and wrath upon the nations that have not obeyed Me.”

The remnant of Jacob will live among many peoples like dew from the LORD and showers on grass. Their presence will also be like a lion among animals, overcoming enemies who have no one to rescue them. Both images place their future under God’s power, beyond what other people can arrange or prevent.
After promising victory over their foes, the LORD names things He will remove from His own people: horses, chariots, fortified cities, sorcery, fortune-tellers, and idols. He will stop them from bowing to objects their own hands have made.
The people might welcome deliverance from enemies while resisting the loss of their familiar protections. Yet the LORD promises both. His rescue includes freeing them from false worship and from the powers on which they have come to depend.
The passage ends with His vengeance against disobedient nations. The LORD judges the nations and cleanses His people. Belonging to Him gives the remnant no reason to defend its own unfaithfulness while asking Him to punish everyone else.

Prayer
Lord, make us like dew to people who need life, not like a threat to the weak. Remove the idols and false securities we defend, and teach us to trust Your justice without seeking revenge. Amen.
