Do Not Mourn Today

9Nehemiah the governor, Ezra the priest and scribe, and the Levites who were instructing the people said to all of them, “This day is holy to the LORD your God. Do not mourn or weep.” For all the people were weeping as they heard the words of the Law.
10Then Nehemiah told them, “Go and eat what is rich, drink what is sweet, and send out portions to those who have nothing prepared, since today is holy to our Lord. Do not grieve, for the joy of the LORD is your strength.”
11And the Levites calmed all the people, saying, “Be still, since today is holy. Do not grieve.”
12Then all the people began to eat and drink, to send out portions, and to rejoice greatly, because they understood the words that had been made known to them.

The people weep as they hear the words of the Law. Nehemiah, Ezra, and the Levites tell them that the day is holy and that they should not mourn. They are not saying sin does not matter. They are teaching the people how to receive a holy day when grief has already begun.
Go and eat what is rich, drink what is sweet, and send out portions to those who have nothing prepared, since today is holy to our Lord. Do not grieve, for the joy of the LORD is your strength.
Joy is not private comfort here. It includes eating, drinking, and sending food to people who have none prepared. The people begin to rejoice because they understand the words that have been made known to them.
"The joy of the LORD is your strength" directs them toward the Lord, not toward measuring how cheerful they feel. This holy day calls them to receive his word with rejoicing. Even those without a meal prepared are to share in it; holiness and generosity belong together.
