Psalm 132:1-18
The LORD Chose Zion
Read the passage
1A song of ascents. O LORD, remember on behalf of David all the hardships he endured,
2how he swore an oath to the LORD, and vowed to the Mighty One of Jacob:
3“I will not enter my house or get into my bed,
4I will not give sleep to my eyes or slumber to my eyelids,
5until I find a place for the LORD, a dwelling for the Mighty One of Jacob.”
6We heard that the ark was in Ephrathah; we found it in the fields of Jaar.
7Let us go to His dwelling place; let us worship at His footstool.
8Arise, O LORD, to Your resting place, You and the ark of Your strength.
9May Your priests be clothed with righteousness, and Your saints shout for joy.
10For the sake of Your servant David, do not reject Your anointed one.
11The LORD swore an oath to David, a promise He will not revoke: “One of your descendants I will place on your throne.
12If your sons keep My covenant and the testimony I will teach them, then their sons will also sit on your throne forever and ever.”
13For the LORD has chosen Zion; He has desired it for His home:
14“This is My resting place forever and ever; here I will dwell, for I have desired this home.
15I will bless her with abundant provisions; I will satisfy her poor with bread.
16I will clothe her priests with salvation, and her saints will sing out in joy.
17There I will make a horn grow for David; I have prepared a lamp for My anointed one.
18I will clothe his enemies with shame, but the crown upon him will gleam.”

The worshipers ask God to remember David's hardships and his vow to find a dwelling place for the LORD. David had refused the comfort of bed and sleep until that work was done. The song recalls finding the ark and calls the people to worship at God's footstool. They ask Him to come to His resting place, clothe His priests with righteousness, and give His people joy.
Then the psalm turns from David's vow to God's oath. The LORD promised to place one of David's descendants on his throne. If David's sons kept God's covenant and instruction, their descendants would also sit on his throne.
God also chose Zion as His dwelling. His promises are wonderfully specific: abundant provisions, bread for the poor, salvation for the priests, and joyful songs from His people. He will strengthen David's royal house, shame its enemies, and make the crown of His anointed one shine.
The promise to David reaches its fulfillment in Jesus. The angel tells Mary that her Son will receive David's throne and reign forever. Peter later recalls God's oath to David as he announces that Jesus has risen and been exalted. God's King lives, and His kingdom will not end.

What This Means for Us
Our hope rests on God's faithfulness to His promise. Jesus lives and reigns even when the future of a church or household feels uncertain. Worship Him as King and ask Him to help you obey His word.
The God who promises a shining crown also promises bread for the poor. A worshiping community should notice hunger within its reach. Find out whether someone needs groceries or a meal, and share what you can as an expression of gratitude to this generous King.
Prayer
Faithful God, thank You for keeping Your promise through Jesus, the King whose reign will never end. Give Your people joyful worship and willing obedience. Feed those who are hungry, and make us generous with the provision You have entrusted to us. Amen.
