How Good and Pleasant

1A song of ascents. Of David. Behold, how good and pleasant it is when brothers live together in harmony!

2It is like fine oil on the head, running down on the beard, running down Aaron’s beard over the collar of his robes.

3It is like the dew of Hermon falling on the mountains of Zion. For there the LORD has bestowed the blessing of life forevermore.

David calls it good and pleasant when brothers live together in harmony. To describe that goodness, he pictures fine oil poured on Aaron's head and running down his beard to the collar of his robes. Aaron was anointed with oil for service as priest. The image gives harmony the richness of a blessing received from God.

David also compares it to the dew of Hermon falling on the mountains of Zion. Like moisture refreshing the ground, harmony brings good to the people who share in it. The psalm ends by naming the LORD as the Giver: there He bestows the blessing of life forevermore.

Prayer

God of blessing, bring truthful harmony to families and communities. Protect people from unity used as a cover for harm, and teach us the patient practices that make shared life good. Amen.
