Psalm 23:1-6
The Shepherd's Care
1A Psalm of David. The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want.
2He makes me lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside quiet waters.
3He restores my soul; He guides me in the paths of righteousness for the sake of His name.
4Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.
5You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows.
6Surely goodness and mercy will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever.

David calls the LORD his shepherd, so he will not lack what the shepherd knows he needs. The green pastures and quiet waters picture nourishment and rest, while the restored soul suggests more than a change of mood. God brings the person back toward life and guides him along righteous paths for the sake of His name.
The valley of the shadow of death is not avoided. David walks through it, but he will fear no evil because God is with him. The rod and staff are sources of comfort: the shepherd protects and directs. Presence, not an explanation of the valley, is what makes the difference.
The scene changes to a table prepared before enemies. God anoints David's head with oil, and his cup overflows. Goodness and loving devotion pursue him, and he expects to dwell in the house of the LORD for days without end. The psalm promises God's care, not a life free from valleys or enemies.

Prayer
Good Shepherd, restore those who are worn down and stay near those walking through danger. Give us rest and direction, and make our household a place where Your care becomes visible to others. Amen.
