The Harvest of the Earth

14And I looked and saw a white cloud, and seated on the cloud was One like the Son of Man, with a golden crown on His head and a sharp sickle in His hand.
15Then another angel came out of the temple, crying out in a loud voice to the One seated on the cloud, “Swing Your sickle and reap, because the time has come to harvest, for the crop of the earth is ripe.”
16So the One seated on the cloud swung His sickle over the earth, and the earth was harvested.
17Then another angel came out of the temple in heaven, and he too had a sharp sickle.
18Still another angel, with authority over the fire, came from the altar and called out in a loud voice to the angel with the sharp sickle, “Swing your sharp sickle and gather the clusters of grapes from the vine of the earth, because its grapes are ripe.”
19So the angel swung his sickle over the earth and gathered the grapes of the earth, and he threw them into the great winepress of God’s wrath.
20And the winepress was trodden outside the city, and the blood that flowed from it rose as high as the bridles of the horses for a distance of 1,600 stadia.

John sees a white cloud, and seated on the cloud is one like a son of man with a golden crown and a sharp sickle. An angel comes from the temple and calls with a loud voice for him to use the sickle because the hour to reap has come and the harvest of the earth is ripe.
The one seated on the cloud swings the sickle over the earth, and the earth is reaped. Another angel comes from the temple in heaven with a sharp sickle. A further angel with authority over fire calls him to gather the clusters of the earth's vine because its grapes are ripe.
The angel swings the sickle and gathers the vine of the earth, throwing it into the great winepress of God's wrath. The winepress is trodden outside the city, and blood flows as high as a horse's bridle for 1,600 stadia. The vision uses harvest imagery to portray a final and terrible judgment.
John does not explain the first harvest in the same detail as the second. Christians differ over whether it pictures the gathering of the faithful or judgment. The winepress is explicitly named as God's wrath. Its dreadful scale leaves no room to treat His judgment as a minor interruption.
The call to harvest comes from the temple and altar, and the harvest is ripe. This action belongs to heaven's appointed time and authority. The churches are hearing a warning that God will bring evil to account. They are called to receive it humbly, rather than take the sickle into their own hands.
