The Great Prostitute and the Beast

One of the seven angels with the bowls tells John to come and see the judgment of the great prostitute who is seated on many waters. The kings of the earth have committed sexual immorality with her, and the inhabitants of the earth have become drunk with the wine of her immorality.

The angel carries John away in the Spirit into a wilderness. He sees a woman sitting on a scarlet beast full of blasphemous names, with seven heads and ten horns. The woman is clothed in purple and scarlet, adorned with gold, jewels, and pearls, and holds a golden cup full of abominations and the impurities of her sexual immorality.

On her forehead is written a name of mystery: “Babylon the great, mother of prostitutes and of earth's abominations.” John sees that she is drunk with the blood of the saints and the blood of the witnesses of Jesus. He marvels greatly at her, but the angel will explain her and the beast.

The angel shows John a woman whose luxury, political reach, and religious seduction are tied to bloodshed. John is not invited to admire the costume; the vision exposes the cost hidden beneath the city's wealth. The beast carries her here. Later, in verse 16, the angel says the beast and its horns will turn against her and destroy her. That later reversal shows how little security this alliance provides.

The woman is a symbol in a vision, not permission to degrade a woman or target a modern city without textual and historical care. Ask what systems your household benefits from and who may be paying the hidden cost. Choose one honest change that refuses luxury built on exploitation, without pretending one purchase makes anyone pure.
