The River of Life

1Then the angel showed me a river of the water of life, as clear as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb
2down the middle of the main street of the city. On either side of the river stood a tree of life, bearing twelve kinds of fruit and yielding a fresh crop for each month. And the leaves of the tree are for the healing of the nations.
3No longer will there be any curse. The throne of God and of the Lamb will be within the city, and His servants will worship Him.
4They will see His face, and His name will be on their foreheads.
5There will be no more night in the city, and they will have no need for the light of a lamp or of the sun. For the Lord God will shine on them, and they will reign forever and ever.

The angel shows John a river of the water of life, bright as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb. The river runs down the middle of the city's street, and on either side of it stands the tree of life. The tree bears twelve kinds of fruit, yielding its fruit every month, and its leaves are for the healing of the nations.
The vision reaches back to Eden, where access to the tree of life was lost, but it does not merely restore a private garden. The river runs through the city and the tree's leaves are for the nations. God's promised life is abundant, public, and wide enough to include peoples who have been divided by the old world's violence.
No longer will there be any curse. The throne of God and of the Lamb will be in the city, and His servants will serve Him. They will see His face, and His name will be on their foreheads. The hope is not only relief from pain; it is the end of alienation and the gift of belonging openly to the God who made and redeemed His people.
Night will be no more. The Lord God Himself gives light, so the city does not depend on lamps, the sun, or any created power to remain secure. His servants will reign forever, which joins nearness to God with meaningful service rather than turning eternity into passive escape.
How We Know
Genesis 3 ends with the way to the tree of life guarded after humanity's sin. Ezekiel 47 pictures a river flowing from the sanctuary, with trees bearing fruit each month and leaves used for healing. Revelation brings these images together around the throne of God and the Lamb.
