The Church in Philadelphia

7To the angel of the church in Philadelphia write: These are the words of the One who is holy and true, who holds the key of David. What He opens no one can shut, and what He shuts no one can open.
8I know your deeds. Behold, I have placed before you an open door, which no one can shut. I know that you have only a little strength, yet you have kept My word and have not denied My name.
9As for those who belong to the synagogue of Satan, who claim to be Jews but are liars instead, I will make them come and bow down at your feet, and they will know that I love you.
10Because you have kept My command to persevere, I will also keep you from the hour of testing that is about to come upon the whole world, to test those who dwell on the earth.
11I am coming soon. Hold fast to what you have, so that no one will take your crown.
12The one who overcomes I will make a pillar in the temple of My God, and he will never again leave it. Upon him I will write the name of My God, and the name of the city of My God (the new Jerusalem that comes down out of heaven from My God), and My new name.
13He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.

Jesus, the Holy and True One who holds the key of David, addresses the angel of the church in Philadelphia. What He opens no one can shut, and what He shuts no one can open. He knows their deeds and has placed before them an open door that no one can shut.
They have little power, yet they have kept His word and not denied His name. Jesus will make those from the synagogue of Satan come and acknowledge that He has loved the church. Because they have kept His word about patient endurance, He will keep them from the hour of trial coming on the world.
Jesus is coming soon and tells them to hold fast so no one takes their crown. He will make the one who overcomes a pillar in His God's temple, never to leave. On that person He will write His God's name, the name of the New Jerusalem coming down from heaven, and His own new name.
The church is not praised for having great resources. Its little strength is joined to keeping Jesus' word, and the open door rests on the authority of the One who can open and shut. The promise honors endurance that may look unimpressive to the world but is visible to Christ.
The people opposing them will have to acknowledge that Jesus loves this church. His severe words about a synagogue of Satan address those particular opponents and cannot justify hostility toward Jewish people as a whole. For the believers with little strength, His promises answer exclusion with a lasting place in the presence of God.

Keep His word in the situation you face. If a fellow believer is being excluded, make room for them in your company and encourage them to hold fast.
Prayer
Holy and true Lord, strengthen people with little power who keep Your word. Guard us from contempt and status-seeking, help us hold fast, and give us the deep belonging promised in Your presence. Amen.
