The First Two Horsemen

1Then I watched as the Lamb opened one of the seven seals, and I heard one of the four living creatures say in a voice like thunder, “Come!”
2So I looked and saw a white horse, and its rider held a bow. And he was given a crown, and he rode out to overcome and conquer.
3And when the Lamb opened the second seal, I heard the second living creature say, “Come!”
4Then another horse went forth. It was bright red, and its rider was granted permission to take away peace from the earth and to make men slay one another. And he was given a great sword.

The Lamb opens the first seal, and John hears one of the living creatures say with a voice like thunder, “Come.” He sees a white horse whose rider has a bow, receives a crown, and goes out conquering and to conquer.
When the Lamb opens the second seal, another living creature says, “Come.” A bright red horse appears, and its rider is permitted to take peace from the earth so that people should slay one another. He receives a great sword.
The first rider is not named, and Christians differ over how to understand him. The second rider's work is stated plainly: peace is taken from the earth and people kill one another. John is shown a dreadful loss. The red horse and great sword belong to a scene of judgment in which human lives are at stake.
The Lamb who was praised in heaven is the One opening these seals. His authority does not make the loss of peace less serious. It gives the churches reason to remain faithful to Him as they hear about frightening things. They must listen to what is revealed without claiming names or events that these verses do not supply.

Prayer
Lamb of God, restrain the forces that remove peace and multiply violence. Give us discernment when conquest is glorified, compassion for those harmed by war, and courage to work for peace. Amen.
