Paul is eager to preach in Rome because he is not ashamed of the gospel. His confidence rests on what God does through it: the gospel is His power for salvation to everyone who believes. Its saving strength does not come from the speaker's status or skill.

The Jew comes first, and the Greek is included too. God's promises to Israel matter, and the good news reaches beyond Israel to the nations. No ancestry keeps a believer outside its promise of salvation.

What does the gospel reveal? The righteousness of God, received by faith from start to finish. Later in this letter Paul explains that righteousness from God comes through faith in Jesus Christ and that sinners are justified freely by His grace. God remains just while putting right those who trust in His Son. Our own record cannot provide that standing.

Paul anchors his words in Habakkuk:

The righteous will live by faith.

The prophet's words contrast trust with pride. Paul uses them to explain life before God as a life of faith. We do not begin by receiving Christ and then replace Him with confidence in our achievements.

There is good reason to speak about such a gospel without embarrassment. It offers the rescue we need and cannot earn. Humility and confidence can grow together because the power belongs to God and the gift is received through faith.

God of salvation, thank You for the righteousness we receive through faith in Jesus. Free us from pride in ourselves and shame about His gospel. Give us humble courage to speak of the rescue You provide. Amen.
