Righteousness through Faith in Jesus

21But now, apart from the law, the righteousness of God has been revealed, as attested by the Law and the Prophets.

22And this righteousness from God comes through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe. There is no distinction,

23for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,

24and are justified freely by His grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus.

25God presented Him as an atoning sacrifice in His blood through faith, in order to demonstrate His righteousness, because in His forbearance He had passed over the sins committed beforehand.

26He did this to demonstrate His righteousness at the present time, so as to be just and to justify the one who has faith in Jesus.

27Where, then, is boasting? It is excluded. On what principle? On that of works? No, but on that of faith.

28For we maintain that a man is justified by faith apart from works of the law.

29Is God the God of Jews only? Is He not the God of Gentiles too? Yes, of Gentiles too,

30since there is only one God, who will justify the circumcised by faith and the uncircumcised through that same faith.

31Do we, then, nullify the law by this faith? Certainly not! Instead, we uphold the law.

After showing that no one can be justified by works of the law, Paul announces God's answer. Righteousness from God comes through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe. The Law and the Prophets bear witness to it: the gospel fulfills God's promises rather than contradicting His Scriptures.

All have sinned and fall short of His glory. That includes people with very different histories and reputations. We do not all commit the same wrongs, but none of us can present a record that makes grace unnecessary.

To be justified is to be declared righteous before God. Paul says this comes freely by grace through the redemption in Christ Jesus. It is a gift, but it is not costless. God presented Christ as an atoning sacrifice in His blood. Jesus bears the judgment of sin so that sinners may receive forgiveness and a right standing before God.

This shows how God can remain just while justifying those who have faith in Jesus. He has not dismissed evil as unimportant or made forgiveness depend on pretending we were innocent. He has dealt with sin through His Son.

There is no room left for boasting. Faith receives Christ; it does not become another achievement with which to impress God. Jew and Gentile come to the same God through the same faith.

Nor does faith make God's law worthless. The law reveals our sin and witnesses to His saving answer. Receiving that answer teaches us to honor His holiness while resting our acceptance on Christ's work.

What This Means for Us

When guilt returns, distinguish between something you need to confess and the attempt to make yourself acceptable by suffering long enough. Bring real sin to God, make appropriate repair and trust the sacrifice He has provided in Christ. Forgiveness is His gift, not something we purchase by repeatedly condemning ourselves.

That mercy should also change how we see other believers. We stand together as people justified by grace, with no claim to a higher place because of family, knowledge or achievement. Thank God for receiving people through the same Savior who receives you.

Prayer

Just and merciful Father, thank You for giving Your Son as the atoning sacrifice for our sins. Help us receive Your verdict through faith in Him. Quiet our boasting and our attempts to earn forgiveness, and grow grateful obedience in us. Amen.
