The Branch Will Build the Temple

9The word of the LORD also came to me, saying,

10“Take an offering from the exiles—from Heldai, Tobijah, and Jedaiah, who have arrived from Babylon—and go that same day to the house of Josiah son of Zephaniah.

11Take silver and gold, make an ornate crown, and set it on the head of the high priest, Joshua son of Jehozadak.

12And you are to tell him that this is what the LORD of Hosts says: ‘Here is a man whose name is the Branch, and He will branch out from His place and build the temple of the LORD.

13Yes, He will build the temple of the LORD; He will be clothed in splendor and will sit on His throne and rule. And He will be a priest on His throne, and there will be peaceful counsel between the two.’

14The crown will reside in the temple of the LORD as a memorial to Helem, Tobijah, Jedaiah, and the gracious son of Zephaniah.

15Even those far away will come and build the temple of the LORD, and you will know that the LORD of Hosts has sent Me to you. This will happen if you diligently obey the voice of the LORD your God.”

The word of the LORD comes to Zechariah with an action to perform. He is to take an offering from the exiles who have arrived from Babylon and bring it to the house of Josiah son of Zephaniah. The names of Heldai, Tobijah, and Jedaiah are remembered. Restoration involves real people returning with real gifts.

Zechariah is to take silver and gold, make an ornate crown, and set it on the head of Joshua the high priest. Then he must announce a message about a man named the Branch. The Branch will branch out from his place and build the temple of the LORD.

The promised ruler will be clothed in splendor and sit on a throne. He will also serve as a priest, and peaceful counsel will unite the two offices. The passage joins royal rule and priestly service in a way that points beyond Joshua's immediate role. It gives the future ruler responsibility for God's house and a reign marked by peace.

The crown will remain in the temple as a memorial to the returning exiles and the household that received them. The object remembers the people who helped build, not only the leader who wears it. Those far away will come and build the temple too, and their participation will confirm that the LORD has sent Zechariah.

The promise ends with a condition: this will happen if the people diligently obey the voice of the LORD their God. Obedience is not a payment that makes God keep a promise. It is the fitting response of a community that wants to live inside the future God is announcing.

How We Know

Hebrews 3:1–6 calls Jesus our high priest and the faithful Son over God’s house. Hebrews 7:23–28 explains that His priesthood is permanent and that He lives to intercede for those who draw near to God through Him. Together these passages help Christians read Zechariah’s promised builder and priestly ruler in the light of Christ, while preserving the crown’s immediate role as a sign for the rebuilding community.
