Four Chariots from the Mountains
1And again I lifted up my eyes and saw four chariots coming out from between two mountains—mountains of bronze.
2The first chariot had red horses, the second black horses,
3the third white horses, and the fourth dappled horses—all of them strong.
4So I inquired of the angel who was speaking with me, “What are these, my lord?”
5And the angel told me, “These are the four spirits of heaven, going forth from their station before the Lord of all the earth.
6The one with the black horses is going toward the land of the north, the one with the white horses toward the west, and the one with the dappled horses toward the south.”
7As the strong horses went out, they were eager to go and patrol the earth; and the LORD said, “Go and patrol the earth.” So they patrolled the earth.
8Then the LORD summoned me and said, “Behold, those going to the land of the north have given rest to My Spirit in the land of the north.”

Zechariah lifts his eyes again and sees four chariots coming out from between two bronze mountains. The first chariot has red horses, the second black, the third white, and the fourth dappled horses. All of them are strong.
Zechariah asks what they are. The angel explains that they are the four spirits of heaven going out from their station before the Lord of all the earth. The colored horses are sent toward different lands: the north, the west, and the south. The scene shows heaven's agents moving at God's command.
The strong horses are eager to patrol the earth. The LORD tells them to go, and they patrol. This eagerness is not the impatience of animals acting on their own. The chariots wait for the Lord's order, then carry it out.
The vision gives special attention to those going north. They have given rest to the LORD's Spirit in the land of the north. The phrase is mysterious, but the direction is not accidental. The north has been associated with powers that threatened God's people, and now God's activity reaches there.
The text does not explain a complete meaning for every color or assign the chariots to a modern nation. It tells us enough to see that the LORD of all the earth is not absent from the places where His people cannot see what is happening. His purposes are larger than the visible horizon.
