Truth and Peace

18Then the word of the LORD of Hosts came to me, saying,

19“This is what the LORD of Hosts says: The fasts of the fourth, the fifth, the seventh, and the tenth months will become times of joy and gladness, cheerful feasts for the house of Judah. Therefore you are to love both truth and peace.”

20This is what the LORD of Hosts says: “Peoples will yet come—the residents of many cities—

21and the residents of one city will go to another, saying: ‘Let us go at once to plead before the LORD and to seek the LORD of Hosts. I myself am going.’

22And many peoples and strong nations will come to seek the LORD of Hosts in Jerusalem and to plead before the LORD.”

23This is what the LORD of Hosts says: “In those days ten men from the nations of every tongue will tightly grasp the robe of a Jew, saying, ‘Let us go with you, for we have heard that God is with you.’”

The LORD’s answer now includes the fasts of the fourth, fifth, seventh, and tenth months. These fasts will become times of joy and gladness, cheerful feasts for Judah. The change is not a promise that grief was foolish. It is a promise that God can turn remembered devastation into a future where celebration is honest again.

The command that follows is brief: love truth and peace. The two belong together. Peace without truth can be a quiet arrangement that protects the powerful, while truth without love can become a weapon. The LORD calls the restored community to cherish both.

Peoples will come from many cities. Residents of one city will invite residents of another to go and seek the LORD of Hosts, and the invitation will be personal: “I myself am going.” Many peoples and strong nations will come to seek the LORD in Jerusalem.

The final picture is of ten men from nations of every tongue grasping the robe of a Jew and saying, “Let us go with you, for we have heard that God is with you.” The image does not make one ethnicity a spiritual trophy. It pictures the nations recognizing God's presence with His people and wanting to seek Him too.

The future reaches outward. A community healed by truth, peace, and God's presence becomes a witness that draws others toward Him. The nations want to seek the LORD because they have heard that He is with His people.

What This Means for Us

“I myself am going” is an invitation from someone who also intends to seek the LORD. We can welcome another person to worship without acting as though we have outgrown our own need for Him.

Perhaps a friend would welcome an invitation to church or to read a passage together. Offer to go with them, leave room for their questions, and keep seeking God yourself. The hope you share rests on His presence and faithfulness.

Prayer

God who is true and brings peace, turn old grief toward honest joy. Make Your presence recognizable in our homes, and let our faith invite people toward You rather than drive them away. Amen.
