The Coast Will Become Pastures

4For Gaza will be abandoned, and Ashkelon left in ruins. Ashdod will be driven out at noon, and Ekron will be uprooted.
5Woe to the dwellers of the seacoast, O nation of the Cherethites! The word of the LORD is against you, O Canaan, land of the Philistines: “I will destroy you, and no one will be left.”
6So the seacoast will become a land of pastures, with wells for shepherds and folds for sheep.
7The coast will belong to the remnant of the house of Judah; there they will find pasture. They will lie down in the evening among the houses of Ashkelon, for the LORD their God will attend to them and restore their captives.

Gaza, Ashkelon, Ashdod, and Ekron are named one after another. The LORD’s word against the Philistine coast is severe: cities will be abandoned, driven out, and uprooted. The nation is told that its inhabitants will not remain secure there.
The next picture is of pastures, wells for shepherds, and folds for sheep. Places once occupied by these cities will become grazing land. The change shows how completely the LORD’s judgment overturns the coast’s present life.
Yet the passage does more than announce destruction. The remnant of Judah will find pasture there and lie down in the evening among Ashkelon’s houses. People who have suffered captivity are promised a place to rest.
The reason is given in the final verse: the LORD their God will attend to them and restore their captives. Their future depends on His care. He sees the people who need to be brought home, and the land under judgment will become a place where He provides for them.
The passage holds that promised rest beside a terrible loss for the coast’s cities. Its hope is grounded in the LORD’s restoration of His people, rather than an invitation to enjoy the sight of ruined homes.
