Pride Will Bring Them Low

8“I have heard the reproach of Moab and the insults of the Ammonites, who have taunted My people and threatened their borders.
9Therefore, as surely as I live,” declares the LORD of Hosts, the God of Israel, “surely Moab will be like Sodom and the Ammonites like Gomorrah—a place of weeds and salt pits, a perpetual wasteland. The remnant of My people will plunder them; the remainder of My nation will dispossess them.”
10This they shall have in return for their pride, for taunting and mocking the people of the LORD of Hosts.
11The LORD will be terrifying to them when He starves all the gods of the earth. Then the nations of every shore will bow in worship to Him, each in its own place.

The LORD turns from the coast to Moab and Ammon. Their sin is described through words: reproach, insults, taunts, and threats against Israel's borders. Speech is not treated as harmless when it is joined to contempt and the desire to make another people smaller.
I have heard the reproach of Moab and the insults of the Ammonites, who have taunted My people and threatened their borders.
The judgment that follows is connected to pride. Moab and Ammon have used their position to mock and threaten, and the prophet says they will receive a desolate inheritance. The comparison to Sodom and Gomorrah is a statement about ruin, not a license for God's people to enjoy another nation's destruction.
Then the reason is stated plainly.
This they shall have in return for their pride, for taunting and mocking the people of the LORD of Hosts.
The LORD hears what people with power say about vulnerable people. He also sees what speech is trying to accomplish. Taunting can prepare the way for exclusion, theft, and violence by making the target seem unworthy of protection.
The section ends with a surprising horizon. The LORD will terrify these nations when He starves all the gods of the earth. The nations of every shore will bow in worship to Him, each in its own place. The goal is not one nation becoming proud because another nation has fallen. It is the end of rival claims to ultimate authority and the worship of the true God.
