The LORD Within Her Is Righteous

1Woe to the city of oppressors, rebellious and defiled!
2She heeded no voice; she accepted no correction. She does not trust in the LORD; she has not drawn near to her God.
3Her princes are roaring lions; her judges are evening wolves, leaving nothing for the morning.
4Her prophets are reckless, faithless men. Her priests profane the sanctuary; they do violence to the law.
5The LORD within her is righteous; He does no wrong. He applies His justice morning by morning; He does not fail at dawn, yet the unjust know no shame.

Zephaniah brings the judgment home to Jerusalem. The city is called oppressive, rebellious, and defiled. Its problem is not that it lacks information. It has heard a voice and refused it. It has received correction and rejected it.
She heeded no voice; she accepted no correction. She does not trust in the LORD; she has not drawn near to her God.
The leaders are then described through animals. Princes are roaring lions. Judges are evening wolves, leaving nothing for the morning. The images expose appetite without restraint. People entrusted with public responsibility are consuming the people they were supposed to serve.
The prophets and priests are not spared. The prophets are reckless and faithless. The priests profane the sanctuary and do violence to the law. Religious office has not protected the city from corruption. In fact, the people closest to holy things have used their position to violate them.
Then comes a contrast that keeps the passage from becoming a statement about God's absence.
The LORD within her is righteous; He does no wrong. He applies His justice morning by morning; He does not fail at dawn, yet the unjust know no shame.
God is present and righteous while the city's leaders are corrupt. His faithfulness is not measured by the behavior of people who claim to represent Him. The unjust can continue without shame for a time, but their lack of shame does not turn injustice into innocence.

If a leader uses God’s name to defend harmful conduct, compare the conduct with His word. Seek help from someone able to address it honestly. You can continue trusting the LORD while refusing to excuse someone who misrepresents Him.
Prayer
Righteous LORD, keep us from refusing correction or using responsibility to consume others. Give us courage to protect the vulnerable and faith to trust Your justice. Amen.
