A Meek and Humble People

After the nations are judged, God promises a change in speech and service.

For then I will restore pure lips to the peoples, that all may call upon the name of the LORD and serve Him shoulder to shoulder.

The promise is not about one group becoming impressive while everyone else disappears. Peoples are given lips that can call upon the LORD, and they serve Him together. Speech is being restored for worship and shared service rather than for insults, lies, and pride.

The worshipers come from beyond the rivers of Cush, and scattered people bring an offering. The picture reaches farther than one local neighborhood. God is gathering people who have been separated and teaching them to approach Him together.

Then the promise returns to the problem that began the book: shame and pride. On that day, the proud will be removed, while a meek and humble people remain. The remnant is not described as helpless or spineless. They are people who trust in the name of the LORD rather than in their own importance.

The result is a people who no longer do wrong or speak lies. They feed and lie down with no one to make them tremble. This is more than a change in public vocabulary. It is a change in the conditions of life. Truth, safety, and trust are allowed to take root together.

For a family, the passage asks what our words are doing. Are they making worship and service possible, or are they building suspicion and pride? Pure speech is not polished speech. It is speech that can tell the truth, call on God, and stand beside another person without needing to dominate them.
