1 Peter

First Peter is a letter to believers scattered through several provinces of the Roman world, people Peter calls elect exiles. Their faith is real, but their circumstances are unsettled. The letter begins with God's mercy, a living hope through Jesus' resurrection, and an inheritance that cannot decay or fade. It does not offer hope by pretending that grief and pressure are small.

Peter connects that hope to holy conduct. The believers are redeemed not with silver or gold but with the precious blood of Christ, so their new life should show itself in reverent obedience and deep love for one another. They are born again through God's enduring word, which means the community's identity is received from God rather than secured by social approval.

The letter then describes the church as God's household: living stones, a spiritual house, a holy priesthood, and a people called out of darkness. Because they belong to God, they are to live honorably among outsiders. Peter addresses government, masters, marriage, suffering, and public witness. These instructions require care. They do not make abuse righteous, turn unjust authority into God's voice, or command a vulnerable person to remain in danger.

Peter repeatedly returns to the suffering of Christ. Jesus did no sin and made no threats when He was abused, entrusting Himself to the One who judges justly. That example is not a command to protect an abuser from consequences or to silence someone who has been harmed. It is a call for believers not to answer evil by becoming evil, while still pursuing truth, protection, and justice.

The final chapter speaks to elders, younger believers, anxious people, and everyone facing the devil's opposition. Leaders are to serve willingly and without domination. The church is to clothe itself with humility, cast anxiety on God, resist evil, and stand firm together. First Peter's last word is not that suffering is the whole story. The God of all grace restores, secures, strengthens, and establishes His people in Christ.
