Set Your Hope Fully

Peter moves from the believers' future hope to the shape of their present minds. They are to prepare their minds for action, remain sober-minded, and set their hope fully on the grace to be given when Jesus Christ is revealed. Hope is not an excuse to drift. It gives the mind a direction while the future is still unseen.

He calls them obedient children and tells them not to conform to the passions of their former ignorance. The command assumes that grace changes a person's pattern of life. Peter is not describing people who were once uninformed and are now superior. He is calling people who have received mercy to stop letting an old way of seeing control them.

The standard is the holiness of the One who called them: “Be holy, because I am holy.” Holiness is not a special costume for religious professionals. Peter says it belongs in all they do, during their stay as foreigners, because the Father judges each person's work impartially.

Their conduct is shaped by redemption. They were not bought out of an empty way of life with silver or gold, things that perish. They were redeemed with the precious blood of Christ, a lamb without blemish or spot. The price describes the worth of Christ's self-giving, not a transaction in which human suffering pays God back.

Christ was known before the foundation of the world and revealed in these last times for their sake. Through Him they believe in God, who raised Him from the dead and glorified Him. Faith and hope therefore rest in God, not in the family's record of perfect performance.

A household can make holiness sound like image management. Peter gives it a deeper center: remember who called you, what Christ has done, and where your hope is headed. Then make the next choice with a mind awake to grace rather than ruled by old desires.
