Hannah's Song

1At that time Hannah prayed: “My heart rejoices in the LORD; my horn is exalted in the LORD. My mouth speaks boldly against my enemies, for I rejoice in Your salvation.
2There is no one holy like the LORD. Indeed, there is no one besides You! And there is no Rock like our God.
3Do not boast so proudly, or let arrogance come from your mouth, for the LORD is a God who knows, and by Him actions are weighed.
4The bows of the mighty are broken, but the feeble are equipped with strength.
5The well-fed hire themselves out for food, but the starving hunger no more. The barren woman gives birth to seven, but she who has many sons pines away.
6The LORD brings death and gives life; He brings down to Sheol and raises up.
7The LORD sends poverty and wealth; He humbles and He exalts.
8He raises the poor from the dust and lifts the needy from the ash heap. He seats them among princes and bestows on them a throne of honor. For the foundations of the earth are the LORD’s, and upon them He has set the world.
9He guards the steps of His faithful ones, but the wicked perish in darkness; for by his own strength shall no man prevail.
10Those who oppose the LORD will be shattered. He will thunder from heaven against them. The LORD will judge the ends of the earth and will give power to His king. He will exalt the horn of His anointed.”

Hannah rejoices in the LORD and in His salvation. Her prayer begins with the God who has answered her, then opens out to His rule over the whole earth. No one is holy like Him, and no other refuge is like this Rock.
Because the LORD knows and weighs actions, pride cannot hide behind impressive appearances. The mighty can lose their strength, the hungry can be fed, and the needy can be lifted from the ash heap to a place of honor. Hannah's own experience belongs within this larger declaration of God's power and care.
She speaks of the LORD's authority over death and life, poverty and wealth, humiliation and honor. The foundations of the earth belong to Him. Human power is never independent of its Maker, and no one prevails by strength alone.
Her prayer ends with judgment and a king. The LORD will guard His faithful ones, defeat His opponents, and strengthen His anointed. Hannah's praise reaches beyond the birth of her own son toward God's rule through His king. When Luke later tells of Jesus' coming, Mary also praises God for raising the humble, and Gabriel announces the King whose reign will never end.
How We Know
Mary's praise in Luke 1:46–55 also names God's holiness and His raising of the humble and hungry. Gabriel has already announced that her son Jesus will receive David's throne and reign forever (1:32–33). Read together, the passages connect these songs of reversal with the Bible's hope in God's saving King.

This prayer refuses to measure worth by status, abundance, influence, or apparent strength. It also refuses to turn God's justice into a household weapon. The God who brings down pride is the God who raises people who have been pushed low.
Ask where your household has made visible success into a measure of worth. Practice honoring someone who is easily overlooked, sharing power rather than displaying it, and speaking carefully about people whose circumstances are hard. Let praise of the LORD change how the household treats the weak, not only how it sounds when the household sings.
Prayer
Holy God, You are not impressed by pride or frightened by human power. Lift our eyes from status and comparison. Make our household strong enough to protect the overlooked, humble enough to receive correction, and grateful enough to praise You for every good gift. Amen.
