1 Samuel

First Samuel begins with a woman who pours out her grief before God and ends with a king falling on a battlefield. Between those scenes, a child named Samuel learns to listen, the ark reminds Israel that God cannot be managed, and the people ask for a king because they want to be like the nations around them.

The book gives us no simple leadership story. Saul is chosen, strengthened, and given real opportunities to obey, yet fear and impatience keep bending his decisions. David is anointed while still overlooked in his father's house, then spends years running from the king who wants him dead. David is brave, but the book also shows his anger, his strategic compromises, and the people he could have harmed when he chose restraint instead.

First Samuel is especially honest about the difference between appearance and the heart. Hannah's prayer is heard when her social position is low. Eli's sons hold religious office while despising the people they serve. David's older brother sees a shepherd boy as presumptuous, while God sees what others cannot. The story does not ask us to admire power simply because it is successful or to call every strong feeling faith.

Read these chapters aloud with room for difficult questions. Ask what the text actually says about God's judgment, human motives, leadership, friendship, violence, and grief. Do not turn David, Saul, Samuel, Hannah, or Jonathan into flat examples for children to copy. Notice together the Lord who hears the overlooked, rejects hollow obedience, protects the vulnerable, and remains faithful while His people learn what it means to follow Him.
