The Medium at Endor

3Now by this time Samuel had died, and all Israel had mourned for him and buried him in Ramah, his own city. And Saul had removed the mediums and spiritists from the land.
4The Philistines gathered together and camped at Shunem, while Saul gathered all Israel and camped at Gilboa.
5When Saul saw the Philistine army, he was afraid and trembled violently.
6He inquired of the LORD, but the LORD did not answer him by dreams or Urim or prophets.
7Then Saul said to his servants, “Find me a woman who is a medium, so I can go and consult her.” “There is a medium at Endor,” his servants replied.
8So Saul disguised himself by putting on different clothes, and he set out with two of his men. They came to the woman at night, and Saul said, “Consult a spirit for me. Bring up for me the one I name.”
9But the woman replied, “Surely you know what Saul has done, how he has killed the mediums and spiritists in the land. Why have you set a trap to get me killed?”
10Then Saul swore to her by the LORD: “As surely as the LORD lives, no punishment shall come upon you for this.”
11“Whom shall I bring up for you?” the woman asked. “Bring up Samuel,” he replied.
12But when the woman saw Samuel, she cried out in a loud voice and said to Saul, “Why have you deceived me? You are Saul!”
13“Do not be afraid,” the king replied. “What do you see?” “I see a god coming up out of the earth,” the woman answered.
14“What does he look like?” asked Saul. “An old man is coming up,” she replied. “And he is wearing a robe.” So Saul knew that it was Samuel, and he bowed facedown in reverence.

Saul inquires of the LORD, but the LORD does not answer him by dreams, Urim, or prophets. Saul orders his servants to find a woman who is a medium. They tell him about a woman at Endor, and Saul disguises himself and goes to her by night with two men.
The woman is afraid because Saul has cut off the mediums, but Saul swears that no punishment will come to her. He asks her to bring up Samuel. When she sees Samuel, she cries out that Saul has deceived her. Saul asks what she sees and what the figure looks like. She describes an old man wearing a robe. Saul recognizes Samuel and bows facedown.
Saul has removed mediums from the land, yet when the LORD gives no answer he seeks one himself. He even swears by the LORD that the woman will not be punished for the consultation. Invoking God’s name does not make the request faithful: Saul is using an oath to secure access to a practice he has removed from the land.
The passage is not a method for consulting the dead or a promise that hidden guidance will solve fear. It records a king trying to force an answer after refusing the word already given. Bring uncertainty to God honestly, seek wise and lawful help, and do not let panic make a forbidden path look like the only path.

Saul's silence from God does not make every source of guidance legitimate. His fear has become urgent enough that he breaks his own public policy and deceives the medium to get access.
The scene should not become a curiosity about contacting the dead. Its moral center is Saul's refusal to remain under God's authority when he cannot control the answer.
Ask where fear has made secrecy feel reasonable. Bring the situation into honest counsel before urgency takes over.
Prayer
LORD, keep us from seeking control through deception or forbidden paths. When we are afraid and answers seem absent, give our household patience, truthful counsel, and courage to remain faithful. Amen.
