2 Peter

Second Peter is a final, urgent letter from Peter to believers who already know the Christian message but need to remain steady in it. He begins with God's provision: through knowing Jesus, believers have everything necessary for life and godliness, along with promises that are precious enough to change what they desire and how they live.

That provision does not make growth automatic. Peter calls his readers to make every effort to add virtue, knowledge, self-control, perseverance, godliness, brotherly kindness, and love to their faith. He wants a faith that becomes fruitful and remembers the cleansing Christ has already given rather than treating spiritual maturity as a performance that earns acceptance.

Peter then grounds his message in testimony. He and the other apostles did not follow cleverly devised myths; they witnessed Jesus' majesty and heard the Father's voice. He also points readers to the prophetic word and says Scripture came as men spoke from God while carried along by the Holy Spirit. The letter honors both reliable witness and careful attention.

Much of the second chapter warns about false teachers who exploit people, promise freedom while being enslaved to corruption, and distort grace into permission for evil. The warnings are severe, but they are not a license for suspicion, slander, or spiritual control. The church must test teaching by its truth, fruit, and allegiance to Christ while trusting God to judge rightly and rescue the godly.

The final chapter addresses scoffers who dismiss Christ's promised return because history appears unchanged. Peter answers that God is not slow; He is patient, giving people room to repent. The Day of the Lord will come, and the promise of a new heaven and new earth gives the present life a moral direction. Believers are to live in holiness, peace, vigilance, and growth while they wait.
