The Lord Is Patient
8Beloved, do not let this one thing escape your notice: With the Lord a day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like a day.
9The Lord is not slow in keeping His promise as some understand slowness, but is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish but everyone to come to repentance.
10But the Day of the Lord will come like a thief. The heavens will disappear with a roar, the elements will be destroyed by fire, and the earth and its works will be laid bare.

Peter tells his beloved readers not to let one thing escape their notice: the Lord's relationship to time is not like ours. A day is like a thousand years to Him, and a thousand years are like a day. Peter is not giving a conversion formula for God's calendar. He is loosening the church's assumption that a promise is false simply because it has not arrived on our preferred schedule.
The Lord is not slow in keeping His promise as some understand slowness. He is patient with people, not wanting anyone to perish but everyone to come to repentance. God's delay is therefore not indifference. It is mercy that gives space for repentance.
That patience should change how believers speak about people who are still far from God. We do not know how much time another person has, and we cannot manufacture repentance by pressure or fear. We can tell the truth, pray, invite, and live in a way that makes the grace we announce credible.
Peter also refuses to turn patience into denial. God's appointed day will arrive without warning. Peter pictures the present heavens vanishing amid a roar, the elements being consumed, and the earth's works exposed. Mercy has a present window, but it is not permission to postpone every response forever.
The balance is important for a family: wait without becoming careless, and warn without becoming cruel. God holds together a serious future judgment and a patient desire for repentance. We should do the same.
