A New Heaven and Earth
11Since everything will be destroyed in this way, what kind of people ought you to be? You ought to conduct yourselves in holiness and godliness
12as you anticipate and hasten the coming of the day of God, when the heavens will be destroyed by fire and the elements will melt in the heat.
13But in keeping with God’s promise, we are looking forward to a new heaven and a new earth, where righteousness dwells.
14Therefore, beloved, as you anticipate these things, make every effort to be found at peace—spotless and blameless in His sight.

Peter asks a practical question after describing the coming day of the Lord: since everything will be destroyed in this way, what kind of people ought believers to be? He does not answer with a chart of end-time events. He answers with conduct—holiness and godliness.
The future is not meant to make Christians indifferent to the present. It gives present choices a horizon. If God's judgment is real and the world's current arrangement is not permanent, then secret sin, cruelty, and selfish ambition are not harmless simply because they seem to prosper for a time.
Peter says believers anticipate and hasten the coming day of God, when the heavens will be destroyed by fire and the elements will melt in the heat. The language is dramatic and difficult, but the pastoral direction is clear: live now in the light of what God has promised to do.
