A Pillar of Cloud and Fire

17When Pharaoh let the people go, God did not lead them along the road through the land of the Philistines, though it was shorter. For God said, “If the people face war, they might change their minds and return to Egypt.”
18So God led the people around by the way of the wilderness toward the Red Sea. And the Israelites left the land of Egypt arrayed for battle.
19Moses took the bones of Joseph with him because Joseph had made the sons of Israel swear a solemn oath when he said, “God will surely attend to you, and then you must carry my bones with you from this place.”
20They set out from Succoth and camped at Etham on the edge of the wilderness.
21And the LORD went before them in a pillar of cloud to guide their way by day, and in a pillar of fire to give them light by night, so that they could travel by day or night.
22Neither the pillar of cloud by day nor the pillar of fire by night left its place before the people.

When Pharaoh lets the people go, God does not lead them by the way of the land of the Philistines, although that way is near. God says that the people may change their minds when they see war and return to Egypt. Instead, God leads them by the way of the wilderness toward the Red Sea.
The people of Israel go up out of Egypt equipped for battle. Moses takes the bones of Joseph with him because Joseph had made the sons of Israel solemnly swear to carry them up when God visited them.
They set out from Succoth and camp at Etham, on the edge of the wilderness. The LORD goes before them by day in a pillar of cloud to lead them along the way and by night in a pillar of fire to give them light, so that they may travel by day and night.
The cloud and fire do not depart from before the people. God's guidance is visible and continuous, but it is not always the shortest route. He leads according to what the people can bear and according to the deliverance he is accomplishing.
The journey includes Joseph's remembered faith, the people's vulnerability, and God's patient presence. Freedom begins with leaving Egypt but continues as the people learn to follow.

What This Means for Us

Moses also carries out an old promise by taking Joseph's bones. Faithfulness includes obligations that reach beyond the urgent needs of the day. Remember a commitment that someone is depending on you to keep, and make a practical plan to honor it as you move forward.

God who leads your people, guide us when the shortest road is not the safest one. Help us remember faithful promises, follow your presence, and care for people who are still learning to walk in freedom. Amen.
