You Will Be My Treasured Possession

1In the third month, on the same day of the month that the Israelites had left the land of Egypt, they came to the Wilderness of Sinai.

2After they had set out from Rephidim, they entered the Wilderness of Sinai, and Israel camped there in front of the mountain.

3Then Moses went up to God, and the LORD called to him from the mountain, “This is what you are to tell the house of Jacob and explain to the sons of Israel:

4‘You have seen for yourselves what I did to Egypt, and how I carried you on eagles’ wings and brought you to Myself.

5Now if you will indeed obey My voice and keep My covenant, you will be My treasured possession out of all the nations—for the whole earth is Mine.

6And unto Me you shall be a kingdom of priests and a holy nation.’ These are the words that you are to speak to the Israelites.”

7So Moses went back and summoned the elders of the people and set before them all these words that the LORD had commanded him.

8And all the people answered together, “We will do everything that the LORD has spoken.” So Moses brought their words back to the LORD.

In the third month after leaving Egypt, Israel camps before Mount Sinai. Moses goes up to God, and the LORD gives him words for the whole people. First He reminds them what they have seen: His acts against Egypt, His care in carrying them on eagles' wings, and His bringing them to Himself.

The destination of rescue is a relationship with the Lord. He has not merely removed Pharaoh's claim; He has gathered Israel to belong to Him. Now He calls them to obey His voice and keep His covenant. They will be His treasured possession among the nations, for the whole earth is His.

God names their calling as a kingdom of priests and a holy nation. They are to be set apart for Him in a world that belongs to Him. Their special place carries responsibility to serve and display His holiness.

Moses brings these words to the elders, and all the people answer together that they will do everything the LORD has spoken. Their promise is serious. The rescue has already happened, and the life of covenant obedience now lies before them.

Peter later uses this language for believers in Christ: a royal priesthood, a holy nation, and a people belonging to God (1 Peter 2:9–10). He says they have received mercy and are called to proclaim the One who brought them out of darkness. Belonging to God leads to a life that makes His goodness known.

Choose a place where your household's faith is visible to someone else: a promise you keep, the way you speak about a neighbor, or your response when you have been wrong. Let gratitude for belonging to Christ lead to honest obedience there. A treasured relationship calls for faithfulness, not superiority.

Prayer

We pray: Covenant God, thank You for carrying Your people and calling them to Yourself. May the mercy we receive guide the way we live, and make our household a faithful witness to Your character. Amen.
