Gnats from the Dust
Read the passage
16Then the LORD said to Moses, “Tell Aaron, ‘Stretch out your staff and strike the dust of the earth, that it may turn into swarms of gnats throughout the land of Egypt.’”
17This they did, and when Aaron stretched out his hand with his staff and struck the dust of the earth, gnats came upon man and beast. All the dust of the earth turned into gnats throughout the land of Egypt.
18The magicians tried to produce gnats using their magic arts, but they could not. And the gnats remained on man and beast.
19“This is the finger of God,” the magicians said to Pharaoh. But Pharaoh’s heart was hardened, and he would not listen to them, just as the LORD had said.

The LORD tells Moses to instruct Aaron to strike the dust with his staff so that it becomes gnats throughout Egypt. They do so, and Aaron strikes the dust. Gnats come upon people and animals throughout Egypt.
The magicians try to produce gnats by their secret arts, but they cannot. The gnats are on people and animals. The magicians tell Pharaoh, “This is the finger of God.” Yet Pharaoh's heart is hardened, and he will not listen.
The plague is brief in the text, but it marks a turning point. The magicians can no longer imitate what God is doing, and they recognize the source even though Pharaoh refuses to respond.
The dust beneath ordinary feet becomes a source of discomfort and judgment. Egypt's confidence in its power is being dismantled through events that no court magician can control.
Pharaoh can no longer point to a matching performance from his magicians. Their failure and their own words testify against his refusal. Yet he will not listen even to them. The obstacle is no longer a claim that Egypt can do just as much.

If someone you trust raises a concern, listen long enough to understand it. Compare what they say with Scripture and the facts rather than dismissing it because it is uncomfortable. Being willing to admit a wrong is part of obedience. Ask God to make you teachable before a habit of refusal grows stronger.
Prayer
God of truth, keep us humble about our abilities and honest about our resistance. Give us courage to obey what we recognize, and keep us from turning every hardship into a careless judgment about others. Amen.
