Genesis 2:1-17
A Garden Prepared for Life
1Thus the heavens and the earth were completed in all their vast array.
2And by the seventh day God had finished the work He had been doing; so on that day He rested from all His work.
3Then God blessed the seventh day and sanctified it, because on that day He rested from all the work of creation that He had accomplished.
4This is the account of the heavens and the earth when they were created, in the day that the LORD God made them.
5Now no shrub of the field had yet appeared on the earth, nor had any plant of the field sprouted, for the LORD God had not yet sent rain upon the earth, and there was no man to cultivate the ground.
6But springs welled up from the earth and watered the whole surface of the ground.
7Then the LORD God formed man from the dust of the ground and breathed the breath of life into his nostrils, and the man became a living being.
8And the LORD God planted a garden in Eden, in the east, where He placed the man He had formed.
9Out of the ground the LORD God gave growth to every tree that is pleasing to the eye and good for food. And in the middle of the garden were the tree of life and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.
10Now a river flowed out of Eden to water the garden, and from there it branched into four headwaters:
11The name of the first river is the Pishon; it winds through the whole land of Havilah, where there is gold.
12And the gold of that land is pure, and bdellium and onyx are found there.
13The name of the second river is the Gihon; it winds through the whole land of Cush.
14The name of the third river is the Tigris; it runs along the east side of Assyria. And the fourth river is the Euphrates.
15Then the LORD God took the man and placed him in the Garden of Eden to cultivate and keep it.
16And the LORD God commanded him, “You may eat freely from every tree of the garden,
17but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil; for in the day that you eat of it, you will surely die.”

The heavens and the earth are completed, and God finishes the work he has done. On the seventh day he rests from all his work and blesses the day, setting it apart. The rest is not an admission that creation has gone wrong. It is part of the good order God gives to the world.
Genesis then draws close to the ground. Before there is a cultivated field, mist rises and waters the surface of the earth. The LORD God forms the man from dust and breathes into his nostrils the breath of life. The man is not self-made. His life is received from God and remains dependent on God.
God plants a garden in Eden and places the man there. Trees grow that are pleasing to the eye and good for food, including the tree of life and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. A river flows from Eden and divides into four rivers, giving the garden a setting of abundance and outward movement.
The man is placed in the garden to work it and keep it. Work is present before sin enters the story, so work itself is not the curse. God also gives a clear command: the man may eat from every tree except the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. The warning is direct: eating from it will bring death.
The garden is generous, and the boundary is specific. God is not withholding all good things; he is teaching the creature to receive life from the Creator rather than seize wisdom on its own terms. The story begins with rest, breath, food, responsibility, abundance, and a word that calls for trust.

What This Means for Us
Receive limits as part of love rather than assuming every boundary is an enemy. God gives the man abundance before giving one prohibition, and he gives work alongside rest. A household can practice that order by thanking God for what is provided, honoring a clear boundary, and refusing to measure worth by nonstop activity.
Prayer
LORD God, thank you for breath, food, work, rest, and the abundance you provide. Teach us to receive your gifts with gratitude and to trust your boundaries when we do not understand everything they protect. Amen.
