19My beloved brothers, understand this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to anger,
20for man’s anger does not bring about the righteousness that God desires.
21Therefore, get rid of all moral filth and every expression of evil, and humbly accept the word planted in you, which can save your souls.

James addresses his readers affectionately, then tells everyone to listen readily, speak carefully and be slow to anger. These instructions matter in our relationships, and they also prepare us to receive the word of God he has been discussing.
Human anger does not produce the righteousness God desires. Feeling certain that we are right does not make an angry response fruitful. We need to examine what our words and actions actually do, rather than use our strong feelings as proof that we are serving God.
James calls for more than a calmer manner. His readers must put away moral filth and evil and humbly receive the word planted in them. Humility accepts God's right to expose and correct sin. We cannot welcome His word while insisting that our favorite wrongs remain untouched.
That word can save their souls. James has already said that God gives new birth through the word of truth. Receiving it is therefore far more than learning conversational skills: we depend on God's saving truth. Listening, restrained speech and repentance are fitting responses to the God who has spoken for our good.
