Seeing People Like Trees

22When they arrived at Bethsaida, some people brought a blind man and begged Jesus to touch him.
23So He took the blind man by the hand and led him out of the village. Then He spit on the man’s eyes and placed His hands on him. “Can you see anything?” He asked.
24The man looked up and said, “I can see the people, but they look like trees walking around.”
25Once again Jesus placed His hands on the man’s eyes, and when he opened them his sight was restored, and he could see everything clearly.
26Jesus sent him home and said, “Do not go back into the village.”

At Bethsaida, people bring a blind man and beg Jesus to touch him. Jesus takes his hand and leads him outside the village. He spits on the man’s eyes, places His hands on him and asks whether he can see anything.
The answer describes a real but incomplete change:
“I can see the people, but they look like trees walking around.”
Jesus places His hands on the man’s eyes again. His sight is restored, and he sees clearly. Jesus sends him home with the instruction not to return to the village.
This healing unfolds in two stages, unlike many of the immediate healings Mark records. The text does not explain why Jesus works this way. It does show Him receiving the man’s account and bringing the restoration to completion. We should not turn the sequence into a technique or assume the second touch is something the man earned by giving the right answer.
The account follows Jesus’ questions about the disciples’ failure to see and understand. Its position may help readers think about their incomplete understanding too. Yet this is first a man receiving sight from Jesus. His need is met personally and fully, and the Lord who leads him by the hand is the One who restores him.

What This Means for Us
We can be honest about the help we still need. Gratitude does not require pretending that every difficulty has disappeared. Bring the whole situation to Jesus, including what you do not understand.
The man’s clear sight comes from Christ’s work. Ask Him to help us receive His truth clearly as well, and be patient with people who are still learning. We can offer guidance without making them pretend they understand more than they do.
Prayer
Lord Jesus, thank You for leading and restoring this man. Receive our unfinished needs and help us speak honestly about them. Give us clearer understanding of Your truth and patience with one another as we learn. Amen.
