Who Do You Say I Am

27Then Jesus and His disciples went on to the villages around Caesarea Philippi. On the way, He questioned His disciples: “Who do people say I am?”
28They replied, “Some say John the Baptist; others say Elijah; and still others, one of the prophets.”
29“But what about you?” Jesus asked. “Who do you say I am?” Peter answered, “You are the Christ.”
30And Jesus warned them not to tell anyone about Him.

On the way to the villages around Caesarea Philippi, Jesus asks His disciples who people say He is. They report the same explanations heard earlier in Mark: John the Baptist, Elijah or one of the prophets.
The answers place Him among figures of great importance. Yet they do not reach the identity announced at the beginning of the Gospel. Jesus then asks the disciples directly:
“But what about you?” Jesus asked. “Who do you say I am?”
Peter answers that He is the Christ. The title means the Anointed One, the promised Messiah. Peter is saying more than that Jesus is an admirable teacher or another prophet. The hope of God’s promised deliverance centers on Him.
Jesus warns them not to tell anyone. The confession is true, but the next passage will show that Peter still needs to learn what kind of Messiah Jesus is. His suffering, death and resurrection will challenge Peter’s expectations.
Receiving Jesus includes being taught by Him about His mission. A correct title matters, but it cannot become a way to make Him fit our preferred picture. The disciples are being led from reports about Him toward a confession whose meaning He will continue to unfold.

What This Means for Us
Knowing what our family believes is a gift, but it is not a substitute for trusting Christ ourselves. Jesus’ question invites a response from the people who have been walking with Him.
Make room for a simple answer and for questions. A child or adult should not have to perform certainty to please the room. Keep returning together to what Jesus reveals about Himself, and ask Him to turn growing understanding into personal trust.

Lord Jesus, You are the Christ. Teach us to receive You as You reveal Yourself, and correct the expectations we impose on You. Give each of us honest faith and a willingness to keep learning from Your Word. Amen.
