Psalm 127:1-5
Unless the LORD Builds
1A song of ascents. Of Solomon. Unless the LORD builds the house, its builders labor in vain; unless the LORD protects the city, its watchmen stand guard in vain.
2In vain you rise early and stay up late, toiling for bread to eat—for He gives sleep to His beloved.
3Children are indeed a heritage from the LORD, and the fruit of the womb is His reward.
4Like arrows in the hand of a warrior, so are children born in one’s youth.
5Blessed is the man whose quiver is full of them. He will not be put to shame when he confronts the enemies at the gate.

Unless the LORD builds the house, its builders labor in vain; unless He guards the city, the watchman stays awake in vain. The psalm does not insult builders or watchmen. It says that work and vigilance cannot finally secure what God does not sustain.
It challenges anxious overwork. Rising early, staying up late, and eating bread earned by painful toil may still miss the gift of sleep. God gives to His beloved even while they sleep. Rest is not laziness when it acknowledges that we are not the only people holding the world together.
Children are described as a heritage from the LORD and sons as arrows in a warrior's hand. The ancient family image should not turn children into trophies or instruments for parental ambition. It celebrates fruitfulness and the blessing of a household with responsibility for its young.
