The Beast from the Earth
Read the passage
11Then I saw another beast rising out of the earth. This beast had two horns like a lamb, but spoke like a dragon.
12And this beast exercised all the authority of the first beast and caused the earth and those who dwell in it to worship the first beast, whose mortal wound had been healed.
13And the second beast performed great signs, even causing fire from heaven to come down to earth in the presence of the people.
14Because of the signs it was given to perform on behalf of the first beast, it deceived those who dwell on the earth, telling them to make an image to the beast that had been wounded by the sword and yet had lived.
15The second beast was permitted to give breath to the image of the first beast, so that the image could speak and cause all who refused to worship it to be killed.
16And the second beast required all people, small and great, rich and poor, free and slave, to receive a mark on their right hand or on their forehead,
17so that no one could buy or sell unless he had the mark—the name of the beast or the number of its name.
18Here is a call for wisdom: Let the one who has insight calculate the number of the beast, for it is the number of a man, and that number is 666.

John sees another beast rising from the earth. It has two horns like a lamb and speaks like a dragon. It exercises the first beast's authority and makes the earth and its inhabitants worship the first beast.
It performs great signs, even making fire come down from heaven in front of people. By these signs it deceives those who dwell on earth and tells them to make an image of the beast. It is allowed to give breath to the image so that it speaks and causes those who will not worship it to be killed.
The beast makes everyone receive a mark on the right hand or forehead so that no one can buy or sell unless he has its mark, which is the beast's name or the number of its name. John calls for wisdom to calculate the number: it is the number of a man, 666.
The second beast looks lamb-like but speaks like the dragon. Its signs persuade people to worship the first beast, and its power reaches into ordinary buying and selling. Deception here is not merely a private lie; it is a public system that makes false worship seem necessary for participation.
The mark and the number have prompted many modern guesses, but this passage gives no warrant for labeling every new technology or economic policy as its fulfillment. It does warn families to notice when convenience, fear, or social pressure asks for an allegiance that belongs to God. Wisdom includes patience as well as alertness.
