The Great White Throne

11Then I saw a great white throne and the One seated on it. Earth and heaven fled from His presence, and no place was found for them.
12And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne. And books were opened, and one of them was the Book of Life. And the dead were judged according to their deeds, as recorded in the books.
13The sea gave up its dead, and Death and Hades gave up their dead, and each one was judged according to his deeds.
14Then Death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. This is the second death—the lake of fire.
15And if anyone was found whose name was not written in the Book of Life, he was thrown into the lake of fire.

John sees a great white throne and the One seated on it. Earth and heaven flee from His presence, and no place is found for them. He sees the dead, great and small, standing before the throne, and books are opened.
Another book is opened, which is the book of life. The dead are judged by what is written in the books, according to what they have done. The sea gives up the dead in it, and Death and Hades give up the dead in them.
Each person is judged according to what he has done. Death and Hades are thrown into the lake of fire, which is the second death. Anyone whose name is not found written in the book of life is thrown into the lake of fire.
No status hides anyone from the throne, and death itself is not allowed to keep its dead. The passage presents judgment as personal and comprehensive while making the defeat of Death part of God's final work. The books are opened, so human lives are not treated as invisible or morally weightless.
The book of life also stands open. Earlier Revelation calls it the slain Lamb's book, and praises Him for purchasing people for God by His blood. That is the ground of His people's hope before judgment. Our deeds matter and will be judged; they do not make Christ's saving work unnecessary. This throne calls us to sober honesty and dependence on Him.

Righteous Judge, You know our deeds completely. Forgive us through the Lamb who was slain, bring hidden sin into honest confession, and teach us to live before You in faith. Amen.
