Zechariah 5:5-11
The Basket of Wickedness
5Then the angel who was speaking with me came forward and told me, “Now lift up your eyes and see what is approaching.”
6“What is it?” I asked. And he replied, “A measuring basket is going forth.” Then he continued, “This is their iniquity in all the land.”
7And behold, the cover of lead was raised, and there was a woman sitting inside the basket.
8“This is Wickedness,” he said. And he shoved her down into the basket, pushing down the lead cover over its opening.
9Then I lifted up my eyes and saw two women approaching, with the wind in their wings. Their wings were like those of a stork, and they lifted up the basket between heaven and earth.
10“Where are they taking the basket?” I asked the angel who was speaking with me.
11“To build a house for it in the land of Shinar,” he told me. “And when it is ready, the basket will be set there on its pedestal.”

The angel tells Zechariah to lift his eyes and see what is approaching. A measuring basket is going out, and the angel identifies it as the people's iniquity in all the land. The image is not a scale for calculating which person has sinned the most. It presents wickedness as something that has filled the community.
The lead cover is lifted, and a woman is sitting inside the basket. The angel says, “This is Wickedness,” then pushes her down and closes the cover. The vision personifies evil so Zechariah can see it being contained. It is a vivid image, not a statement that women are naturally wicked.
Two women approach with wind in their wings, like storks, and lift the basket between heaven and earth. Zechariah asks where they are taking it. The angel answers that they are taking it to the land of Shinar to build a house for it, where it will be set on its pedestal.
Shinar recalls the land associated with Babylon in the book of Genesis. The angel gives the destination, but he does not explain every feature of the flying women or the pedestal. We should not create a detailed system from details the vision leaves unexplained. The clear movement is that wickedness is removed from the land and assigned a place away from the restored community.
The vision does not tell us that evil is eliminated by pretending it is not present. It is named, contained, and carried away. A community seeking holiness must be willing to identify what is corrupting it rather than placing a cover over the problem and calling the basket empty.

Naming a problem is not the same as solving it, but refusing to name it guarantees that it will keep filling the basket. Communities become healthier when corruption is described honestly and moved out of positions of influence.
Ask what your household has been covering with silence. Name the behavior without attacking a person's whole identity, and decide what boundary or outside help is needed to keep the harm from continuing.
Prayer
Holy God, help us recognize wickedness without hiding it or blaming the wrong people. Give us courage to remove corrupt habits, set wise boundaries, and make our households safer and truer. Amen.
