An Angel on the Way

20Behold, I am sending an angel before you to protect you along the way and to bring you to the place I have prepared.
21Pay attention to him and listen to his voice; do not defy him, for he will not forgive rebellion, since My Name is in him.
22But if you will listen carefully to his voice and do everything I say, I will be an enemy to your enemies and a foe to your foes.
23For My angel will go before you and bring you into the land of the Amorites, Hittites, Perizzites, Canaanites, Hivites, and Jebusites, and I will annihilate them.
24You must not bow down to their gods or serve them or follow their practices. Instead, you are to demolish them and smash their sacred stones to pieces.
25So you shall serve the LORD your God, and He will bless your bread and your water. And I will take away sickness from among you.
26No woman in your land will miscarry or be barren; I will fulfill the number of your days.
27I will send My terror ahead of you and throw into confusion every nation you encounter. I will make all your enemies turn and run.
28I will send the hornet before you to drive the Hivites and Canaanites and Hittites out of your way.
29I will not drive them out before you in a single year; otherwise the land would become desolate and wild animals would multiply against you.
30Little by little I will drive them out ahead of you, until you become fruitful and possess the land.
31And I will establish your borders from the Red Sea to the Sea of the Philistines, and from the desert to the Euphrates. For I will deliver the inhabitants into your hand, and you will drive them out before you.
32You shall make no covenant with them or with their gods.
33They must not remain in your land, lest they cause you to sin against Me. For if you serve their gods, it will surely be a snare to you.”

Israel will not have to find its own way into the land. God promises to send an angel ahead to guard the people and bring them to the place He has prepared. This messenger bears God's name and authority. Listening to him is a matter of obedience to the LORD, not simply accepting advice for a journey.
The warning about other gods is just as serious as the promise of protection. Israel must not worship them or make agreements that draw the people into their service. God calls that worship a snare: what seems to offer security can instead trap His people in disobedience.
God also explains why He will drive out the nations gradually. An emptied land would become desolate, with wild animals multiplying against Israel. His care includes dangers the people might overlook in their desire to arrive quickly.
These are covenant promises to Israel about life in the land, including health, children, and the defeat of its enemies. They are not a guarantee that every faithful family today will escape sickness or infertility, nor a command for Christians to seize territory. We can trust the God who keeps His word without claiming every promise as though it were addressed to our own circumstances.

What This Means for Us
Faithfulness to God may require refusing something attractive. A friendship, opportunity, or habit becomes dangerous when keeping it means joining in what God forbids. Talk honestly about that pressure, especially when saying no could cost acceptance.
God gives Israel a reason for this particular delay; He does not explain every delay we experience. We can trust His wisdom while admitting that we do not yet understand what is happening.
Prayer
We pray: Faithful Guide, help us listen to your direction and refuse the gods and compromises around us. Give us patience with the work that takes time, and firmness when waiting could become disobedience. Amen.
