Aaron's Staff Became a Serpent

8The LORD said to Moses and Aaron,

9“When Pharaoh tells you, ‘Perform a miracle,’ you are to say to Aaron, ‘Take your staff and throw it down before Pharaoh,’ and it will become a serpent.”

10So Moses and Aaron went to Pharaoh and did just as the LORD had commanded. Aaron threw his staff down before Pharaoh and his officials, and it became a serpent.

11But Pharaoh called the wise men and sorcerers and magicians of Egypt, and they also did the same things by their magic arts.

12Each one threw down his staff, and it became a serpent. But Aaron’s staff swallowed up the other staffs.

13Still, Pharaoh’s heart was hardened, and he would not listen to them, just as the LORD had said.

The LORD tells Moses and Aaron that when Pharaoh asks for a proof, Aaron is to throw his staff down before him. It becomes a serpent. Pharaoh summons the wise men and sorcerers, and the magicians of Egypt do the same by their secret arts.

Each man casts down his staff, and the staffs become serpents. Aaron's staff swallows their staffs. Yet Pharaoh's heart is hardened, and he will not listen to Moses and Aaron, just as the LORD had said.

The scene is not a contest to see which performer can impress the room. It is a confrontation between the LORD's authority and Pharaoh's claim over Israel. Visible signs can expose power, but they do not force a proud ruler to repent.

Aaron's staff swallows the others. Egypt's magicians can imitate the sign, but their staffs do not survive the encounter. The LORD's authority is greater than the powers Pharaoh summons. Still, the king will not listen. The sign has exposed the weakness of his resistance without ending it.

Pharaoh can summon skilled people to defend his position, but their display cannot make his refusal right. We can do something similar when we collect agreeable opinions instead of listening to a truth that challenges us. An impressive defense is no substitute for obedience to God.

When Scripture corrects you, give the correction a fair hearing before looking for a way around it. If you owe an apology or need to stop a harmful habit, let that truth lead to action. Ask God for a willing heart; being able to argue your case does not mean you are right.

Prayer

LORD, keep us humble before your power and wise about spiritual claims. Expose spectacle that serves pride or control, and make our household value truth, character, and faithful obedience. Amen.
